    There wasn't a dry eye at Nationwide Arena as the Columbus Blue Jackets raised No. 80 to the rafters to honour the memory of goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks.
    During the off-season, the 24-year-old tragically lost his life in a fireworks accident on July 4. He was, by all accounts, a remarkable human who had grown into being a promising goaltending prospect in the Blue Jackets system, and his death had a far-reaching impact within the organization.

    The Columbus Blue Jackets opened their 2021-22 campaign by honoring late goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks. Kivlenieks was killed this summer in a fireworks accident at 24 years old. Some of his family members were in attendance for the ceremony as a banner with the goalie's No. 80 was unveiled.
